Preparing for Storm Season: Tips and Resources
8/5/2024 (Permalink)
As storm season approaches, it's essential for homeowners to take proactive steps to protect their properties and ensure the safety of their families. Storms can bring heavy rain, strong winds, and flooding, which can cause significant damage if proper precautions aren't taken. Here are some practical tips and resources to help you prepare for storm season and keep your home safe.
1. Secure Loose Items
High winds can turn loose outdoor items into dangerous projectiles. To prevent damage to your home and property, secure or store away any loose items in your yard, such as:
- Patio Furniture: Move chairs, tables, and umbrellas inside or secure them to prevent them from being blown away.
- Garden Tools and Equipment: Store tools, hoses, and other equipment in a shed or garage.
- Decorative Items: Remove or secure garden ornaments, wind chimes, and potted plants.
2. Inspect and Maintain Drainage Systems
Proper drainage is crucial during storm season to prevent water accumulation and flooding. Take the following steps to ensure your drainage systems are in good condition:
- Clean Gutters and Downspouts: Remove leaves, debris, and dirt from gutters to ensure water can flow freely and away from your home.
- Check Sump Pumps: Test your sump pump to ensure it’s functioning correctly and consider installing a battery backup in case of power outages.
- Inspect Grading: Ensure the ground slopes away from your home to direct water away from the foundation.
3. Trim Trees and Shrubs
Overgrown trees and shrubs can pose a threat during storms. Trim branches and remove dead trees to reduce the risk of them falling on your home or power lines. Hiring a professional arborist can ensure that your trees are healthy and properly pruned.
4. Prepare an Emergency Kit
Having a well-stocked emergency kit can make a big difference during a storm. Your kit should include:
- Water and Non-Perishable Food: Enough for at least three days.
- Flashlights and Batteries: Ensure you have working flashlights and extra batteries.
- First Aid Kit: Include bandages, antiseptic wipes, and any necessary medications.
- Important Documents: Keep copies of identification, insurance policies, and contact information in a waterproof container.
- Portable Phone Charger: To keep your phone charged if the power goes out.

Experiencing property damage, whether due to water, fire, or storm, can be incredibly stressful. Navigating the insurance claims process can add another layer of complexity to an already challenging situation. At SERVPRO®, we understand the intricacies of the insurance claims process and are here to help guide you every step of the way. This guide will educate you on the claims process, highlight common pitfalls, and offer tips on how to document damage effectively.
The Insurance Claims Process
The insurance claims process for property damage typically involves the following steps:
- Immediate Action: As soon as you discover damage, take immediate action to prevent further harm. This may include turning off water sources, boarding up windows, or covering damaged roofs.
- Contact Your Insurance Company: Notify your insurance company as soon as possible. Provide them with details about the damage and inquire about the next steps in the claims process.
- Document the Damage: Before making any repairs, thoroughly document the damage by taking photographs and videos. Keep a detailed inventory of damaged items, including their value and purchase date.
- Temporary Repairs: Make temporary repairs to prevent further damage, such as covering leaks or securing broken windows. Keep receipts for any materials or services you purchase, as these may be reimbursable.
- Meet with the Adjuster: Your insurance company will assign an adjuster to assess the damage and determine the payout amount. Be present during the inspection to ensure all damage is noted and addressed.
- Submit Your Claim: Submit all necessary documentation, including photos, videos, receipts, and repair estimates, to your insurance company. Ensure all paperwork is complete and accurate to avoid delays.
- Review the Settlement Offer: Once your claim is processed, the insurance company will provide a settlement offer. Review it carefully and negotiate if necessary to ensure it covers all repair and replacement costs.
- Repair and Restoration: After settling the claim, proceed with the repair and restoration process. Choose a reputable restoration company, like SERVPRO, to ensure high-quality work.
Tips for Documenting Damage and Working with Adjusters
Proper documentation and effective communication with insurance adjusters can significantly impact the success of your claim:
- Photograph Everything: Take clear, detailed photos of all damaged areas and items from multiple angles. Capture the overall damage and close-up shots of specific issues.
- Create a Damage Inventory: List all damaged items, including their make, model, age, and estimated value. This inventory will be essential for your claim.
- Keep Records of Communication: Document all interactions with your insurance company, including phone calls, emails, and letters. Note dates, times, and key points discussed.
- Be Honest and Thorough: Provide accurate information about the damage and the events leading to it. Honesty and transparency will facilitate a smoother claims process.
- Accompany the Adjuster: Walk through your property with the adjuster to ensure all damage is noted. Point out hidden or less obvious issues that may require attention.

The Science of Drying: How SERVPRO® Ensures Your Property is Dry and Safe
4/10/2024 (Permalink)
A sprinkler system froze and busted, causing damage and flooding.
When disaster strikes in the form of water damage, whether from floods, leaks, or even tornadoes, the clock starts ticking on the potential for secondary damage, such as mold growth and structural issues. That's where the science of drying comes into play, a critical component of water damage restoration that SERVPRO of Northeast Columbus excels.
Understanding Water Damage
The first step in addressing water damage is understanding its extent and your property's specific drying needs. Water can penetrate deeply into structural materials, creating a perfect environment for mold and bacteria to thrive. Quick and efficient drying is essential to prevent further damage and safeguard your health.
The Principles of Drying
SERVPRO's approach to drying focuses on three key scientific factors: air flow, humidity, and temperature. By manipulating these elements, our experts accelerate the evaporation process, effectively removing moisture from air and materials.
- Air Flow: Proper ventilation is crucial in the drying process. SERVPRO® uses industrial-grade air movers to facilitate consistent air flow across wet surfaces, speeding up the evaporation of moisture.
- Humidity Control: Reducing the humidity levels in the affected area is essential. SERVPRO employs professional-grade dehumidifiers to extract water vapor from the air, helping prevent secondary water damage and mold growth.
- Temperature Management: Warm air holds more moisture. SERVPRO's experts carefully monitor and adjust the temperature to optimize the drying process, using heaters if necessary to encourage evaporation and achieve the ideal drying conditions.
Advanced Monitoring Techniques
Precise monitoring throughout the drying process ensures efficiency and effectiveness. SERVPRO technicians use state-of-the-art moisture detection equipment, such as hygrometers and infrared cameras, to monitor the moisture levels within walls, floors, and ceilings. This allows for targeted drying strategies that are both thorough and time-efficient.
The SERVPRO Advantage
What sets SERVPRO apart in the water restoration industry here in Columbus is not just our use of advanced drying technologies, but also our team's expertise. Our professionals are IICRC certified, meaning they're trained in the latest restoration techniques to handle water damage of any scale. SERVPRO's 24/7 emergency service ensures that we're there when you need us the most, ready to begin the drying process immediately to minimize damage and restoration costs.
Madison County Airport: Storm Cleanup
4/10/2024 (Permalink)
A small snippet of the damage caused by the torando.
Since its inauguration in 1967, the Madison County Airport in London, Ohio, has been a central hub for aviation fans in the central Ohio region. Spanning 148 acres, this airport houses numerous hangars and a single runway, protecting hundreds of planes, including historically significant aircraft, alongside unique cars and personal possessions.
The Tornado's Toll
On the morning of February 28, 2024, a tornado bore down on central Ohio, setting its sights on the Madison County Airport. The devastating force of the storm completely destroyed two of the newer hangars and significantly damaged four to five others, leaving the entire facility damaged. Among the properties affected by the tornado, Madison County Airport appeared as one of the most severely impacted. SERVPRO® was one of the first calls made after seeing the devastation.
SERVPRO's Rapid Response
Upon surveying the extent of the tornado's destruction, SERVPRO was promptly called to action. Our production manager arrived on-site within two hours of the initial report, closely followed by our skilled technicians. Collaborating with local trash management services, our dedicated teams began the task of restoration.
The Restoration Journey
Committing to 12-hour shifts, SERVPRO's technicians sorted through the wreckage, retrieving planes, fragments, and the personal effects of pilots and hangar owners, salvaging whatever was possible. With our reconstruction specialists on the ground, we started on the clean-up operation, clearing debris and laying the groundwork for the airport's restoration.

Jon’s engagement with the initiative has gone beyond simple mentorship; he's actively introducing students to the possibilities & rewards of careers in construction and restoration.
A standout moment of Jon's involvement occurred on Thursday, March 21st, at Linden McKinley High School, where he demonstrated his leadership & community support. Volunteering over an entire school day, Jon led a project that created over a dozen dog beds for a local shelter. These weren't ordinary dog beds but ones crafted from PVC pipes, displaying Jon's innovative approach and creative mindset.
Jon's hands-on instruction in constructing the dog beds provided students with a practical learning experience, the value of teamwork & hard work. This project contributed to a worthy cause & left a lasting impression on the students. We hope they left that day knowing they can make a positive impact on their community & have local support from SERVPRO in their missions.
Jon's dedication to mentorship & community engagement highlights the transformative power of positive role models & the importance of connecting industry professionals with the next generation. His recent work not only enriches the lives of Columbus City Schools' students but also reinforces the strong bond between SERVPRO & the communities it serves.
